Why We Moved to Thailand | Our Story, Cost of Living & Starting Over

Updated: Apr 15

We Didn’t Just Move to Thailand… We Changed Our Entire Life

Hey… so let’s talk about it.

Because a lot of people think moving to Thailand is just about cheaper rent, good food, and a better life. And yes, that’s part of it, but that’s not the real story. The real story is we didn’t just move to Thailand, we changed our entire life.

Before we ever booked a flight, we were already questioning everything. Working, saving, repeating the same routine, and still feeling like something was missing. We weren’t struggling, but we also weren’t fully living. That’s the part people don’t talk about.

Once we opened ourselves up to leaving the U.S., everything shifted. We stopped asking “Where should we go?” and started asking “What kind of life do we actually want?” Thailand just happened to check the boxes for us.

Life here is not a vacation. This is real life. We go to cafes, explore neighborhoods, deal with visas, and figure things out just like anyone else living abroad. The difference is we have time. Time to think, time to slow down, and time to actually enjoy our day-to-day life.

Now let’s get into what people don’t tell you.

The biggest mistake people make is thinking this will feel like a permanent vacation. It doesn’t. You still have responsibilities, and you’ll still have bad days. The environment changes, but life is still life.

Another big one is visas.

This is where people mess up. You can’t ignore it or figure it out later. Thailand has rules, and if you don’t have a plan, you can end up stressed or even forced to leave.

Let’s talk about cost, because this is another area where expectations are off. Thailand can be affordable, but it depends on how you live. If you try to recreate your U.S. lifestyle, your costs will add up fast. But if you adapt even a little, that’s where the real savings come in.

There’s also a transition period that no one really prepares you for. New systems, new culture, and a different way of doing things. Some days feel exciting, and some feel frustrating. That’s normal.

And the biggest shift of all? This experience will change you. What you value, what you need, and what you’re willing to tolerate all start to look different. Once that shift happens, it’s hard to go back.

So, is it worth it? For us, yes. Not because everything is perfect, but because we gained something we didn’t have before. Freedom, options, and a lifestyle that actually feels aligned with how we want to live.

If you’re thinking about making this move, don’t just rely on random videos and opinions. Get clear on your plan.
