From transportation and banking to food delivery and translation, these are the apps we actually use every week living abroad in Thailand.
Essential Mobile Apps for Life in Thailand
When people think about moving abroad, they usually focus on the big things first. Visas. Housing. Flights. Cost of living.
But honestly? Some of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades come from the small things.
The right apps can completely change how easy your day-to-day life feels in Thailand. They help you get around, order food, pay bills, translate conversations, book transportation, transfer money, and even find apartments.
When we first moved to Bangkok, there were a few apps we downloaded immediately that became part of our everyday routine. Some we use multiple times a day.
If you’re planning a move to Thailand, scouting trip, or even an extended stay, here are the mobile apps we genuinely think are essential.
1. Messaging & Communication
These are the apps you’ll probably use DAILY in Thailand.
LINE
The #1 messaging app in Thailand.
Used for:
• Condo communication
• Delivery coordination
• Doctors & clinics• Businesses
• Thai friends & contacts
• Service providers
A lot of people in Thailand will ask for your LINE before your phone number.
Still useful for:
• Family back home
• International friends
• Group chats
• Video calls
Most Americans still rely heavily on WhatsApp after moving abroad.
Google Voice
VERY important for Americans moving abroad.
Helpful for:
• Keeping your U.S. number
• Receiving bank verification texts
• Calling U.S. businesses
• Two-factor authentication (2FA)
• Staying connected without paying expensive roaming fees
We always recommend setting this up BEFORE leaving the U.S.

2. Transportation & Navigation
Transportation apps make Bangkok MUCH easier to navigate.
Grab
Grab is basically Southeast Asia’s version of:
• Uber
• DoorDash
• Grocery delivery
• Package delivery
You can use it for:
• Rides
• Food delivery
• Groceries
• Convenience store orders
People use Grab constantly.
Bolt
Bolt is another ride app that is often CHEAPER than Grab.
We usually compare both before booking transportation.
Google Maps
This app becomes your survival guide in Thailand.
Helpful for:
• BTS directions
• MRT routes
• Restaurant reviews
• Walking directions
• Traffic estimates
• Finding hidden food spots
ViaBus
Useful for:
• Tracking buses
• Bus routes
• Public transportation timing
Very helpful if you use Bangkok buses regularly.

We also use Viator to book tours, food experiences,
airport transfers, day trips, and activities while traveling.

Wise is one of the MOST useful apps for expats and long-term travelers in Thailand.

Known for some of the best exchange rates in Thailand.
Many expats specifically look for SuperRich locations when exchanging money.
Thai Banking Apps
Popular banks include:
• Bangkok Bank
• KBank
• SCB
Thailand is VERY advanced with QR code payments.
From malls to tiny street food vendors, people pay with their phones everywhere.

Helpful for:
• Paying by Thai QR code
• Shopping locally
• Restaurants & cafes
• Street food vendors
• Daily purchases
• Cashless payments
Thailand is VERY QR-payment focused, so apps like Moreta can make daily life easier if you’re still setting up banking or don’t qualify for a Thai bank account yet.

Thailand’s food delivery system is honestly amazing.
GrabFood
One of the most popular food delivery services in Thailand.
You can order:• Thai food• Groceries• Desserts• Drinks• Convenience store items

Another popular delivery app.
Some restaurants appear on Foodpanda that aren’t on Grab.
Having both gives you more options.

We personally use it often while also trying local Thai products.
